Yes, you can renovate in winter in Toronto, and for indoor projects it is often the best time of year. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, flooring, interior painting and condo renovations all run on schedule from November to March. Projects that depend on dry ground or mild weather, such as concrete, excavation, roofing and exterior painting, are better left for spring.

Why Winter Is a Good Time to Renovate Indoors
Indoor work does not depend on the weather, so the schedule is easier to predict. Many homeowners put off projects until spring, which often makes it easier to book your preferred start date in the winter months. You also get the work done before the busy spring and summer, when you want to be using your home and garden rather than living around a renovation.
Kitchens: Start Planning Now for a Winter Build
A kitchen renovation takes about 6 to 18 weeks depending on scope, and custom cabinets have the longest lead time. Planning the design and ordering in October or November sets up a winter build and a finished kitchen by spring. If you are hoping to host the holidays in a new kitchen, a small refresh is realistic, but a full renovation started now will usually run into the new year.

Bathrooms and Basements
Both are contained, indoor projects that suit the season. A full bathroom renovation usually takes 3 to 6 weeks, and winter is a good time to add a heated floor and a better exhaust fan. We go into detail in our post on winter-ready bathroom renovations. Basements take about 6 to 10 weeks of construction and are where many families gain the most living space; see why fall is the best time to start a basement renovation.
Flooring: Watch the Humidity
Winter air in a heated Toronto home is dry, and wood flooring reacts to that. Hardwood and engineered wood expand and shrink with humidity, so installing them in very dry conditions can lead to gaps later. Most manufacturers ask for indoor relative humidity of roughly 35% to 55% and for the boxes to acclimate in the room before installation, usually for a few days. A humidifier during and after the job helps.

Porcelain tile and luxury vinyl are less sensitive and install well at any time of year. Compare the options in the best flooring for a kitchen, or speak with our flooring and tiling team in Toronto.
Interior Painting and Finishing Work
Painting indoors works well in winter as long as the house is heated and there is some ventilation. Low-odour paints make it easy to keep windows closed. It is also a good season for trim, doors, built-ins and lighting upgrades. Our interior painting cost guide has current prices.
Condos: Building Rules Still Apply
Condo renovations are not affected by the weather, but they are affected by building rules on working hours, elevator bookings, noise and approvals. Getting board approval in the fall keeps a winter project on track. See our condo renovation services in Toronto for more.
What to Save for Spring
- New foundations, additions that have not broken ground, and underpinning that needs excavation outside
- Concrete steps, walkways and driveways
- Exterior painting, siding and most roofing
- Decks, fences and landscaping
Some of this can be done in winter with heated enclosures and protection, but it costs more and the results are rarely better. If the exterior of your home needs attention, our fall renovation checklist shows what to finish before the freeze.
How to Live Comfortably Through a Winter Renovation
- Ask for dust walls and zipper doors so heat and dust stay where they belong
- Plan a temporary kitchen if your kitchen is out of service
- Agree on how doors are kept closed during deliveries to save heat
- Keep paths clear of snow and ice for the crew and inspectors

Frequently Asked Questions
Is winter a good time to renovate in Toronto?
For indoor projects, yes. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, flooring and painting run on schedule regardless of the weather, and winter start dates are often easier to book.
Can hardwood floors be installed in winter?
Yes, if indoor humidity stays in the manufacturer's range, usually about 35% to 55%, and the flooring acclimates in the room first. A humidifier helps in dry weather.
Will a renovation make my house cold in winter?
It should not. Dust walls, zipper doors and keeping exterior doors closed during deliveries keep the heat in. Only work that opens exterior walls needs temporary heat.
What renovations should wait until spring?
Foundations and excavation, concrete, exterior painting, siding, most roofing, decks and landscaping. They can be done in winter with protection, but at a higher cost.
